This ethos recently came to life following a familiarization trip to Zambia attended by Becky from the Totem Connections team.
Together with our preferred travel partners DMS and DragonFly, the trip offered an opportunity to experience the destination through a local lens. Partnerships like these are invaluable, not only for the exceptional destination knowledge they bring, but because trusted local relationships and experienced ground crews provide something equally important: confidence and care.
When delivering programs around the world, having trusted “boots on the ground” matters. These relationships provide local insight, support and safety, ensuring experiences are both authentic and seamless.
During the visit, the group spent time at a local school. It was here that something stood out.
The school had planned a water pump project that had unfortunately not moved forward. Access to reliable fresh water remained an ongoing challenge.
Rather than simply acknowledging the situation and moving on, the Becky asked a simple question: ‘How can we help?’
The first step was understanding what was required. A quote was sourced, conversations began, and together the team explored how they could contribute. What started as an observation soon became a shared purpose.
Last week, that project officially came to life.
After many months of communications and hands-on work, the school now has a fully functioning water pump, providing students with access to fresh water.
For the children, it means something incredibly simple – and incredibly important. Better access to clean water, day after day.
For us, it became a reminder of what travel can achieve when experiences extend beyond itineraries.
